A Walk in the Woods

I’ll fess up: I used to laugh every time I heard the word “staycation” on the news. It was the overuse of the word these past few years that amused me, not the concept. I actually think we all need to look around our backyards more and appreciate just where we call home. Too many times did I realize while living in Washington, DC that I only ventured out to see monuments and museums (most free to boot!) when I needed to play tour guide to visiting friends and family.

Now I find myself with the open road as my home and the biggest backyard ever. Idle time can’t be filled in front of the television or spent mindlessly surfing the internet. Nor should it. Which makes this city girl realize that it’s time to slow down and smell the honeysuckle – and I sure can out here in Lee County, VA. Somehow breaking a sweat hiking Wallens Ridge is more satisfying than on a stairmaster. And the view is spectacular.

Staycation? I’d say it’s more fun than funny these days. Try it some time and let me know what you discover.

I staycation every weekend in my garden, which isn’t nearly as big as the great big Southern Garden you guys are in, but it gives me peace. Much needed these days. Love the photos and videos.
